First Mile Project – Ojibway Language App Story

Native Language First Nation App success story.

Usually reserved for First Nations connectivity and extensive infrasturcture projects, the First Mile.ca project website was extreamly excited to learn about our open source language project. They felt that our company played a signifigant role in preserving our traditional ancestrial Ojibway language.  The First Mile project team even wrote an in depth story on our Ojibway language app.

The opensource iPhone app code helps other communities build their own language app.

Youth Empowerment Gathering – Encouraging Youth

2012 Youth Empowerment Gathering DOTC

Supporting the Dakota Ojibway Youth is close to our heart!

On March 28th. 2012, our company will have reached an important milestone – we will be presenting our ideas and sharing our knowledge to our own First Nations youth from our very own Dakota Ojibway Tribal Council area. “It means a lot to us to present to the DOTC youth and marks a important milestone for us.” – Darrick Baxter.

Ogoki Learning Systems Inc. is pleased to announce our participation in the Youth Empowerment Gathering 2012. This gathering is geared toward youth from across the Dakota Ojibway Tribal Council area including our home community of Sandy Bay First Nation! The conference will feature presentations from Darwin Ironstand, Gillian Roy, Erica Doty, Carol Moar, Jade Harper, among other respected presenters.

“Our First Nations youth have always played an important role in downloading, using and promoting our technology. We are now focusing on tools to help them build their own projects. Its only a matter of time before I am considered a dinosaur in this industry. It’s at that time that I will pass on the reigns to the next generation of app developers.” – Darrick Baxter, President/Founder, Ogoki Learning Systems Inc.

Teaching App Development in 1 hour

Our presentation is pretty jam packed. We will be presenting on a variety of things including:

  • “Why Apps?” – Exploring the mobile app development market (Powerpoint)
  • “How to make an app” – Inside developing apps
  • “App Creation Story video” – How and why we started making apps
  • “Wired Kids” – Source Code presentation
  • Questions/Answers

Build your own iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch Language App with our code.

We are pleased to announce our new initiative to help strengthen all the First Nations and Indigenous languages around the world. Our goal is to provide each community with pre-written code enabling them to create their own language App. First Nations communities, students, teachers, and members can access our Ojibway Language App as a free download template to allow them to create their own language App for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

We are giving away our software code!

Download, share and distribute our Ojibway Language App version 1.1 software code. Create a universal App in 5 very simple steps.

  1. Download our new OjibwayMapApril2013.zip file  (old zip file: version1 Source Code Zip File)
  2. Install Apple Xcode (Free download for Mac Computers)
  3. Replace the Ojibway Audio files, pictures, and titles with your own files
  4. Rename the App to your language
  5. Upload the App to iTunes using your developer account.
  6. Call or email us if you have any questions.

The world loves great apps, especially if their free. The Bamoseda radio program helped us promote our app across Canada by featuring our story in 2011.

Our Ojibway App featured in Windspeaker Newspaper

Did you know that the Ojibway Language and People App was featured in a national Aboriginal publication? It’s true! Our little Ojibway App is garnering national attention throughout Canada. The Aboriginal Multi-Media Society (AMMSA) recently featured our app in the Windspeaker National Newspaper.

Written by Jennifer Ashawasegai and published this fall, the article tells you part of the story on how and more importantly why the Ojibway app was created.

“We have to start preserving this language. We have to start preserving our heritage. And the best way to do it is to get it into schools. Schools are really relying on digital technology to sort of retain the students’ attention.”

ICT Summit Showcases the Ogoki App Creation Story Video

Starting on February 23th  and going through until the 25th,  Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada will play host to the First Nations Information and Communication Technology Summit.

We are presenting our App Creation Story and will be publicly launching our “Creation Story” documentary video video on the first day of the ICT Summit. The ICT Summit brings together forward thinkers and industry leaders from as delegates from across Canada, USA and abroad. App making waves in ICT

The first and only Ojibway app available on the Apple platform is making waves in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry. With over 3000 downloads in its first couple months, the Ojibway People and Language app is gaining in popularity and even has its own fan following.

“We get at least 10 to 15 requests a week from the public to include features, new languages, other words and phrases and games. We just cant keep up. We need to start training more youth to create these apps and mobile tools.” – Ogoki Learning Systems Inc.

A recent story published in the “ICT Best Practices in Rural, Remote & Aboriginal Communities” is telling the full story on how our mobile app made it in a field of over 500,000 apps.

Ogoki Learning Systems Inc. is currently looking for partners in delivering specialized education and training to First Nation communities that will teach the youth how to program and create apps for the Apple iPhone or iPad.
